… a little bit of this, that and a lot more

Colonialist last week posed the challenge

 COLONIALIST MAGIC MOMENT CHALLENGE:

Sometimes there is a fleeting moment when what one sees, hears or feels comes together to produce  images or sensations, or a quick series of them, that are truly memorable.  My challenge is to recall one such, and to do a post about it.  If you take up the challenge, please notify me so that I can do a list.

I thought really long and hard. All I seem to remember and focus on is the bad. Why are people like that? Or is it just me?

This truly bugged me as I know that I do have magic moments stashed somewhere in that mad mind of mine. Except for the obvious firsts – feeling my babies’ first kicks in my belly. Seeing them for the first. Holding them the first time.

Their first words, their first time sitting, smiling, etc. Not that one can pinpoint those moments exactly. But you remember them. It’s buried somewhere underneath all the other crap.

But finally I remembered one that was truly magical for me. Our first holiday at the sea. I was happy then.

Money had been tight from the moment we were married. So we hadn’t been on holiday for the first 7 years of our married life.

TA was 6+ and B2 was 2 and a bit. My BFF still booked the holiday for us in Umdloti.

We’d created such a buzz with the kids, they were driving us nuts with questions on “When are we going? When will we be there? Are we gonna stay in the sea? How long is it gonna take?” to “Ma, are you sure we’re going to the sea?”

That was of course TA. B2 was limited to laughs and smiles and “I’m tired. Where the sea?” . They were driving us completely bonkers.

We left that Friday night, coz we wanted to get there at dawn, so we could have our first view of the sea at that magical time.

It was worth it. They were sleeping, and I woke them up – we’d just parked at the chalet we were to stay in, and had a magnificent view of the ocean. It was slightly overcast, but that sun was peaking insistently through those flimsy clouds.

Their wonder and excitement at seeing this mass of water and the sight of the sun coming up was something else. I’m sure I was choked up. It made me feel like I’ve given them the most precious gift. And I also felt like father Christmas.

These are not my pics, we didn’t have a digital then. Courtesy of the www….

That is probably my fondest memory ever.

Trying to get B2 into the water was another experience altogether!

One of my fondest memories was when OH and I were visiting Ireland and being driven around sightseeing by good friends. The scenery was beautiful, the driving relaxed – no hurried pace, the music playing on the radio soothing and I remember thinking to myself that the moment was so perfect that I had to file it away in my mind so that I could retrieve it in the future.
