… a little bit of this, that and a lot more

This is a quick rant.

TA is in Grade 9, a year in which they are expected to finalise their subject choices for the rest of their scholastic careers. We had presentations from the school w.r.t. what subjects they offer as well as what career choices they will have depending on the area they decide to focus on. I was very impressed by this.

Why was I impressed – we never had these benefits. Nor guidance. Choosing a career was easy (not) – your options was either teacher, nurse, doctor or flight attendant. There was no other (better) options. Ok, there were, but I didn’t know of any. And I was told to swot maths, science and accounting. No choice given (nice Dad, huh?). It was regarded that these subjects might just help me with my vocation. HAH.

So having gone through this process at the school with the TA, I was really comfortable that TA and all the other scholars, had sufficient information to make their decisions. They also had the support from the school and of course, parents.

At no point were we told some of the subjects might not be offered as they did not have staff. Nor did they indicate that they might have any other challenges offering any of these subjects.

TA wants to do engineering or architecture. This has been his sing-song for the past two years. We took him seriously two weeks ago when he confirmed his ambitions. Only to find that the school will not be offering EGD (Engineering & Graphic Design – required for admission to university).

So I am pissed off. The school informed me that they were unable to secure a teacher for the 2010 Gr 10 class. They are only able to fulfill their obligations for the current classes from 10 – 12.

Where does that leave us and other parents – we have to find new schools which offer this subject.

I am slightly peeved (understatement) as we liked this school and the teachers (well most of them) as they satisfied just about all our expectations. It was close to home. All TA’s friends are there.

There are only 3 schools in PTA which offer EGD – schools I’ve visited before and have good reputations. BUT we do not fall within their feeder areas.

They have upset my apple cart.

Wish me luck with the hunt.

Have an awesome day, everyone
